If you were to ask a random person about operating systems, it’s very likely that they would be able to tell you only about Microsoft Windows. Around 70 percent of people use some version of Windows, and it is arguably the best-known operating system in the world. This is likely due to its frequent marketing campaigns, and its reputation as the operating system that brought computers to the masses. Microsoft Windows, of course, is the most popular operating system at the moment. It has been through many iterations, and accordingly, it is often considered to be the easiest operating system to use, and the one with the greatest functionality for the widest range of users. Given its evolution since its first incarnation in 1985, this point of view is understandable and has some truth to it. Whenever a new version of Windows is released, it has a number of different packages that each cater to a different sort of user; for example, an Ultimate version for enthusiasts, and a Basic package for light computer users. Additionally, there is a version which is aimed at business users, usually for use in large corporations. There are also downsides to using Windows; because it is “for everyone”, it can be considered too rigid for advanced users, and additionally computer viruses are almost always written for Windows. For people who want to avoid these problems, or are simply looking for something different, there is a free, customizable series of operating systems known collectively as Linux.
Linux’s main feature is that it is free and open-source, which means that its source code is not protected by an End-User License Agreement which prohibits changes. The operating systems themselves (the most recent being called Ubuntu) are free of charge and are available widely on the internet, and are being updated and improved all the time. Crucially, Linux operating systems are fully customizable, and by becoming familiar with the code used, users can make them perform almost any function of which a Windows computer is capable. All programs and add-on for Linux are free, and are also open-source, so running a Linux PC has virtually no costs after buying hardware. Programs are available that allow most Windows software to run on Linux, also, such as WINE. Viruses are practically unheard-of for Linux operating systems, although naturally as any technology increases in popularity, the amount of attention focused on it increases, so this may not always remain true. There can also be some compatibility problems for Linux PCs with certain pieces of both hardware and software, however coders and programmers all over the world are working every day to provide drivers and emulators that close the gap between Windows and Linux.
These are only two of the many operating systems available for PCs today. There is actually a wide variety of other operating systems, and more are being created each day that are aimed to be used for specific purposes, such as especially quick booting for people who need their computer only for email. With a little research, users who want to save money, or have a more specially-tailored operating system for their needs can easily find one that suits them.
